Mrs. Balls Chutney - Taste of Home

Mrs. Balls Chutney - Taste of Home - Mrs Balls Chutney has an extended and interesting background dating back again to 1852 when Henry James Adkins married Elizabeth Sarah Spalding and settled in the tiny town of Fort Jackson in Ruler Williams Town, where they ran a little general dealership. In 1870 Sarah began making chutney, but had not been very proficient at marketing or brand-building and burdened the merchandise with the name of "Mrs Henry Adkins Older, Colonial Chutney Producer, Fort Jackson, Cape Colony."

The Adkins' had 11 children. Seven Sons and four Daughters, one of whom was called Amelia, and who continued to marry one Herbert Saddleton Ball, a superintendent on the railways. That they had seven children. They relocated to Johannesburg, and Amelia required her Mother's chutney formula with her. When Henry retired, they shifted to the fairly Seafood Hoek coastal town in Cape Town, and bought various properties for his or her children and their own families, all in close proximity of every other. It had been then that Amelia began producing her Mother's chutney on the home-industry scale.

For the time being, Sarah's Sister Florence and her Brother Harold were already making and continued to help make the proven Adkins chutney, after inheriting the recipe using their Mother. This understandably caused a little of a furore, as both Sisters and Sibling were all making the same chutney formula in immediate opposition to one another.

On his daily trips to Cape Town, Amelia's husband would have a few bottles with him to market, and it was using one of the trips that he fulfilled Food Importer, Fred Metter. Fred began aggressively marketing the chutney, increasing sales so dramatically, that creation could no more continue off their Seafood Hoek home. The factory transferred three times, every time to bigger premises so when the youngest Child, Herbert Saddleton Junior sold his talk about to Metter, sales increased more even. Then they relocated to Retreat. It continued to be a family group business with the three Brothers keeping their talk about.
Amelia's Great Grandson, Desmond Ball, recalls heading to the manufacturing plant during the vacations and doing work for his Uncle Edward who was simply the Manager at that time.

In those full days, there is only 1 original recipe. Desmond explains that his Uncle Harry loved flavours with a little of the bite, and remembers him crushing a chilli and adding it to the initial recipe. That's how Mrs Balls Hot Chutney came into being. Fred Metter then, who was simply still somebody available, decided a milder, sweeter Peach Chutney would sell. It had been also put into their line-up.
